Shirley Weir introduces herself as a Menopause Chick. Now 53, her perimenopause journey began more than ten years ago. Sore breasts, sleep deprivation and brain fog led Shirley to her doctor’s office, then the book store and then “Dr. Google,” but she was left feeling confused, overwhelmed and alone. At 46, she launched MenopauseChicks.com with the mission to empower women to navigate perimenopause-to-menopause & beyond with more confidence and ease. Shirley’s 2016 TEDx talk invited the world to reframe menopause away from the negative, into a phase-of-life worthy of celebration. Menopause Chicks has been featured on major media including NBC’s The Today Show, OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network), Sharecare (a Dr. Oz online platform), and Shirley writes a weekly column for Healthing.ca (a National Post platform.). In April 2016, Shirley hosted the first-ever online menopause party celebrating her own menopause milestone while women tuned in to share their own stories in a private online community. That community has since evolved into one of the most popular “social learning” platforms dedicated to women’s midlife health. It has over 25,000 members who regard the group as the “go-to” place to get answers, learn from experts, and affirm they are not alone. In 2018, Shirley’s first book, MOKITA: How to navigate perimenopause with confidence & ease reached #1 on Amazon in women’s health. Shirley holds a certificate in Peer Counseling from the University of British Columbia, and she is a mom to two teenagers and one Goldendoodle.
